Legendary producer DJ Premier has been making moves in the music biz since his Gang Starr days. In a chat with The Combat Jack Show, Primo revealed that a random request from the Notorious B.I.G. and Sean “Diddy” Combs led to one of the most famous instrumentals in his discography.
Primo explained that he originally made the beat for what would become “Ten Crack Commandments” for Hot 97’s Angie Martinez’s “Top 5 At 9” promo segment when she was just getting started on the station. Jeru the Damaja originally recorded a promo verse for Martinez over the track, which eventually caught the ears of Biggie and Puff, who told Primo to call them live on air.
“Right when I’m ready to turn the volume down, I hear them go, ‘Yo Premier, if you out there, call me!’ and I called,” said Premier. Although B.I.G. and Jeru were at odds at the time, Primo kept true to his team by asking if he could sell the beat to the hefty wordsmith. Recalling the conversation, Primo said that Jeru simply answered “It’s Hip-Hop,” thus leading to the creation of the classic Life after Death track.
Premier goes on to talk about his on-again, off-again working relationship with Jay-Z, squashing beef amicably and more in the clip.
